Descriptions
Predictive criteria for wearing form the postperative mechanical ventilation using preoperative pulmonary function tests and blood gases were examined in 16 patients with impaired pulmonary function undergoing major surgery. Patients with a preperative forced expiratory volume in one second per kg of body weight adove 15 cc/kg were able to wean from the ventilator postpetavely even if they required a long period for mechanical ventilatory support. Therefore, the preoperative forced expiratory volume in one second per kg of body weight can be a useful index for predicing the possibility of wearing fronm the ventilator in surgical patients with the disturbed pulmonary function when they need mechanical ventilation postperatively.
