Alteration of splenic marginal zone of four strains of mice (C_3H/He ICR, ddY and BALB/c) was studied enzyme-histochemically after a single intraperitoneal injection of complete Freund's adjuvant emulsion containing Mycobacterium butyricum. The width of marginal zone decreased in the order : C_3H/He>ICR>ddY>BALB/c. C_3H/He, ICR and BALB/c strains were highly susceptible to experimental amyloidosis, but ddY strain was resistant to it. However, there was no clear relationship between the development of the marginal zone and the susceptibility of amyloidosis. The marginal zone became wide and medium-sized lymphocytes increased in number in the marginal zone since the 7th day after injection in all strains of mice.
