Clinical Study of the Ossification of Posterior Longitudinal Ligament of the Lumbar Spine

Few studies of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) of the lumbar spine have been reported compared with those of the cervical and thoracic spine, because the incidence of clinical symptoms due to OPLL is comparatively low. Recently, however, eight patients with OPLL on the lumbar spine were underwent surgery in our hospital and excellent results were obtained in all cases. We report here these cases and others of OPLL of the lumbar spine. A total of 60 patients with disease of the lumbar spine, who had low back pain, lower limb pain, sensory disturbance and intermittent claudication were studied clinically and roentgenographically. They were divided into two groups, a symptomatic OPLL group and an asymptomatic OPLL group, based on clinical and roentgenographical findings.
