The analysis of the amylase isozyme was performed in pancreatic, hepatic and biliary diseases using a cellulose acetate electrophoresis. In acute or recurrent pancreatitis, increased activity of pancreatic amylase (P-amy) was seen. In chronic pancreatitis with stone, however, the activity of the P-amy decreased in spite of a normal value of serum amylase. In addition to an evaluation of the serum, a correlation between P-amy and other pancreatic related enzymes (including Elastase-1, PSTI and Trypsin) was also analysed. The results showed a good correlation between the P-amy and the Elastase-1.
