Clinical Study of Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament

For study of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, the author has analysed clinically 262 cases collected epidemiologically from Chugoku-area, and has examined 42 patients with cervical myelopathy due to the ossification, who were treated surgically in the clinic of department of orthopedic surgery Yamaguchi University. The results are : 1) Higher incidence was observed in male, approximately twice as much as in female. Initial symptoms mostly began at age 40 to 50. 2) 96% of cases with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament had more or less clinical symptoms and signs.
