The Gastric mucosal cell cycle is one of the important gastric mucosal defensive factors. We studied the changes of gastric mucosal cell kinetrics in experimental stress ulcer not only by the usual bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd) labelling method to detect the generative cells but by flow cytometry to calculate the S phase cell ratio. S phase cell ratio decreased just after stress load no BrdUrd labelled cell was detected in ulcerative lesions. It is suspected that, the decreased cell cycle speed may be responsible for the pathogenesis of stress ulcer. At 48 hours after the stress load was completed, that S phase ratio increased more than control. It was considered to be regenerative change.
