Descriptions
Detailed studies on the deformation of a workpiece during cutting processes have already been carried out. But a few of them have ever dealt with the separation of the component of the instantaneous cutting strain and that of the residual one in the following stage. In order to separate them, it requires to measure the strain quantitatively. The authors have reported the results of the investigation of the cutting strain measured by the photoelastic coating method. In this paper, the behaviour of the strain in the ductile material during the orthogonal cutting process was investigated by the same method. The results obtained through this study are as follows. 1. The comportment of the cutting strain in the ductile material was understood by means of the photoelastic coating method. 2. It was found that the behaviour of the cutting strain in the strain hardening material was similar to that of the elastic material.
