The distribution of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was investigated in the peripheral and central vestibularnervous system of rats using immuno-histochemical method. Moreover, the changes of the distribution of GFAP in the central vestibular nervous system following hemilabyrinthectomy were investigated. The results were as follows: 1. As for the peripheral system, GFAP-like immunoreactivity was observed around the receptor cells, and the vestibular ganglion cells showed two distinct populations: those with intenseimmunoreactivity and those without it. The characteristic distributon of GFAP-like immunoreactivity indicates functional differences between each cells. 2. The dense GFAP immunoreactivity were observed around the surface of the cellsof both sides of lateral vestibular nucleus. It can be concluded that both of the lateral vestibular nucleus play an important role during vestibular compensation.
