A clinico-statistical investigation was carried out on 40 patients with cleft lip and/or palate who had undergone plastic surgery at the Department of Oral and Maxilloficial Surgery, School of Medicine, Yamaguhi University during a 5-year period from 1984 to 1988. Primaly and secondary cases were 31 and 9, respectively. The results were as follows. Primary class. 1. cleft morphology was classified as follows : cleft lip only and /or alveolus in 6 cases (19.4%), cleft lip and palate and/or alveolus in 8 cases (25.8%), and cleft palate only in 17 cases (54.8%). 2. There were 16 males and 15 females. 3. Unialateral cleft lip and/or alveolus and palte were seen in 12 cases, and bilateral condition in 2 cases. In 12 cases, ratio of affected side was shown as 1 : 3 in the raght to the left side. 4. Of all the cases 41.9% was associated with some other abnormalities. 5. Primary lip repair and palatoplasty had been carried out with the triangular flap method, and the mucoperiousteal method, respectively. Secondaly cases. 1. There were 7 males and 2 females. 2. All cases were secondary repair of cleft lip and their nasal deformities.
