Embryologicaal Study of the Muscles of Mustication in the Cat

The development of the muscles of mastication was studied in 43 serial sections of cat embryos with crown-rump length (abbreviated hereafter as CR) of 6.7mm ti 92.8mm A summary of the results is described. 1) The inner, dorsal, lateral and ventral mesenchymal masses around the stem of the mandibular nerve appear to be the early anlage groups of the muscle of mastication. 2) Both anlagen of the M. tensor veli platini and the medial pterygoid muscle are differentiated from the inner mass, those of the lateral pterygoid muscle and the temporal muscle from the dorsal mass, those of the masseter groups except the superficial masseter muscle from the ventral mass, respectively.…
