Pharmacological, toxicological and teratological studies on a new topical corticosteroid, beclometasone dipropionate (KW-053), were experimentally conducted. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Acute toxicity : KW-053, given by various routes, was remarkably recognized low toxicity. 2. Pharmacological studies : No pharmacodynamic effects of KW-053 were demonstrated. 3. Subacute and chronic toxicity : In the rat administered KW-053 subcutaneously, there were observed the characteristic changes of treatment with an anti-inflammatory steroid, but the changes produced by KW-053 300mg/kg/day corresponded with those by dexamethasone 1mg/kg/day. In the rabbit applied steroid-ointment or -cream to the skin, there were observed the changes, too, and the changes produced by KW-053 were slighter than those by dexamethasone.
