In order to clarify the mechanism of volume production of negative ions, both negative and positive ion species in hydrogen plasmas are calculated numerically as a function of plasma parameters by using the particle balance model. In this analysis, we distinguish between the fast electrons e_f and the thermal electrons e, and between the vibrationally excited hydrogen molecules H^*_2 and the ground state molecules H_2. Numerical results show that the negative ions are generated mostly by dissociative attachment to vibrationally excited molecules in a following two step process : e_f+H_2&xrarr
