In this paper the author described what is essential for nursing practice, analyzing two cases in which a nurse or a nursing student faced problems with a patient and/or their family member. Findings in this study suggest that the essential issues for nursing practice are to enhance one's ability to problem solve, to have the ability to think of the other's point of view, and to have the ability to understand another person. The ability to integrate principles of ethics, appropriate nursing care, and problem solving techniques seems to be essential for nursing practice. Nurse educators need to forter the nursing students' essential abillities described above throught the educational process.
