We use a questionnaire to study the policies of 145 medical doctors from 15 departments at Yamaguchi University School of Medicine about discussing the diagnosis and prognosis with the cancer patient. Thirty per cent of the doctors indicated a preference for telling the diagnosis to more than half of the patients. The percentage of patients who wish to be told their diagnosis seems to be increasing. It seems that the trend in our hospital regarding disclosing the diagnosis to the patient is moving toward more revealing of the facts, but with careful consideration.
