Yamaguchi regional health planning emphasizes the importance of the acute rehabilitation for the stroke patient at the medical care institution. But there is no data about the condition of this rehabilitation in this prefecture. Questionnaire surveys to co-medical staff (175 head nurses concerned with stroke patients, 97 physical and occupational therapists) at 147 medical care institutions were carried out to study the condition of the acute rehabilitation practice. Only 28% of nurses and 23% of therapists feel that the acute rehabilitation is practiced enough. The nurses play an important role in the acute rehabilitation, but 61% of them do not have sufficient training. These results suggest that the acute rehabilitation practice is not popular in Yamaguchi prefecture and that education, training and close networking among the medical staff are essential for the effective practice of the acute rehabilitation for the stroke patient.
