Descriptions
We report follow-up results of surgery for primary lung cancer, which was performed in our clinic for 10 years between 1983 and 1992. One hundred and twenty-eight patients were operated for primary lung cancer. The age range was 37 to 84 years old and the mean age was 64. There were 87 males and 41 females. These patients were classified into the former period (1983-1987) and the latter period (1988-1992). Mediastinal lymph node dissection had been used routinely in the latter period but not routinely in the former period. Surgical results were compared between these two groups. There were no significant differences in age, sex, pathological stage and histological types between the two groups. There was no significant difference in survival rate in each pathological stage between the two groups. However, there was a trend toward better survival rate in the latter period than the former period. The improvement in prognosis might be due to either introduction of mediastinal lymph node dissection or progress in adjuvant therapy.
