Descriptions
To investigate the effects of oriental medicak herbs, Juzentaiho-to, on the restoration of strength after surgery, Juzentaiho-to (1000mg/kg/day) was given to the rabbits and/or after surgery. The rabbits were divided into two groups, one with a resection of the ileum about 20cm (20cm resected group) and the other with about an 80cm resection (80cm resected group). According to the diets and Juzentaiho-to received, the rabbits were subdivided into the following group : Group A without Juzentaiho-to before and after surgery, group B with Juzentaiho-to after surgery, Group C with Juzentaiho-to before and after surgery. In the 20cm resected group, the rabbits in group C ate significantly after surgery as compared with fgroups A and B (p<0.01). Group C showed a significantly better recovery of body weight after surgery as compared with groups A and B. More specifically, the postoperative period required for the restoration of body weight before surgery was shorter than those of group A and B (p<0.05). In the 80cm resected group, the sameresults were obtained. We concluded that Juzentaiho-to was effective for the restoration of strength after surgery.
