Factors which influenced the prognosis of early gastric cancer (ECC) were investigated. Results were as follows : the cases which had moderate or deep invasion down to the submucosal layer, submucosal invasion of more than 10mm in diameter, positive lymph node metastasis, positive lymphangitic invasion and had not undergone anti-cancer adjuvant chemotherapy had potential risk factors of recurrence. The present review has led to the conclusion that as to the surgical treatment for early gastric cancer, gastrectomy should be performed with full knowledge of the spread or possible presence of another cancer in the remaining stomach including lymph node dissection at least more than R_2 and in some cases postoperative long-term care, especially adequate multidisciplinary immunochemotherapy.
