Recently, "Uchimuki Shikou" a domestic trend typified by the increasingly inward looking younger generation of Japan, is a common topic on news and current affairs programs in Japan. While it is true that the number of younger Japanese outbound travelers in 2010s is smaller than in 2000s, the population of younger Japanese is also shrinking, and so it is not clear whether this inward tendency is actually increasing. The Japanese mass media often bemoans decreases in Japanese students who are enrolled in degree programs in the US. However, Australia had more Japanese students enrolled in exchange programs in 2009 than they did in 2004, even while the total number of Japanese visitors was decreasing.
