外国人留学生の増加とともに日本社会への不適応現象が問題となり、受け入れの大学が苦慮している例がみられる。本稿では、稲村（1980 ）の『日本人の海外不適応』を手掛かりに、外国人留学生の日本への不適応現象に関して適用できないかという観点で考察した。稲村（1980 ）は精神医学の立場から不適応問題を論じているが、本稿では大学のスタッフとしての立場から同氏の適応の段階論について外国人留学生の場合にどの程度あてはまるかを考え、あわせて日本語教育の課題を検討した。
