As a way of offering the opportunity for the students to realize their levels of English, the Practice TOEFL has been given to English major students in Yamaguchi University as a placement test for the past ten years (1979-1988). The results obtained seem to show some trends concerning the characteristics of their English proficiency. The present study first compares the Japanese students' TOEFL scores with those of other nationalities, and then makes a brief study on the total and sectional scores in practice TOEFL by English major students, and finally tries to make a few suggestions for improving the TOEFL score, considering the characteristics and problems that Japanese learners of English have to cope with.
