Descriptions
A quantitative investigation was made of apical dendrites of pyramidal cells in the cingulate gyrus and Ammon's horn in 15 cases of Alzheimer's disease, 20 cases of senile dementia and 30 control cases. In each of these cases, sections were prepared from autopsy material stored in formalin over a long period of time and were stained by a modified Golgi's method (Kelemen - Yamada). On these sections, the spines formed long apical dendrites of pyramidal cells of the 3rd to 5th cortical layers were counted over a length of 350 - 550 μ or even longer from the cell body. Their distribution patterns thus determined were then subjected to a statistical analysis for the detection of significant differences between the groups. In the control group, the distribution pattern of spines corresponded to the model of Valverde and Marin - Padi1.1a
