Studies on the ”Pithy Tissue” of Radish Root (1).

The development of the ”Pithy tissue” in radish root causes much economical damage to the growers of radish. The phenomenon is generally recog-nized to be a kind of untimely maturity , though the cause of the phenomenon is stillleft unsolved. As to the influence of environmental factors on the development of the “Pithy tissue”,the writers conducted the experiment on the effect of NaCl on the development in the farm of the Faculty of Agriculture,Yamaguti university in 1955. The results obtained are summarized as follows: (1) The more in quantity NaCl was mixed in the soil, the earlier the “Pithy tissue” appeared in radish root, and at the same time the lower the percentage of T/R was. (2)The more developed the “Pithy tissue”, the more in quantity the`sugar was contained in radish root, regardless of the quantity of NaCl. (3)The spike of radish developcd earlier on the soil bed mixed with NaCl than on the soil bed without NaCl.(4) The growth of radish、especially in the part of root, was worse in the soil mixed with NaCl than in the soil without NaCl.
