1. A new staining method was studied on the judgement of germinability of hulled rice and whest seeds. 2. It was observed that the embryo and the external parts of the endosperm of live and dead seeds were differently stained with one percent solution of o-methory phenol, one percent solution of neutral red and one percent solution of potassium hydroxide. That is, the embryo of live seeds stained red and the endosperm and embryo of dead seeds stained yellow (Figs. 1,2). It seemed that red staining was induced by the reduction of neutral red by living cells and dead cells remained yellow staining owing to their inability of reductio of neutral red.
