1. The effects of amount of basic fertilizer and number of rice hills in a pot on the number of leaves and grains of the main stem were surveyed with five rice varieties.2. In the case of heavy manuring, the leaves and grains of the main stem increased in number, and especially the number of ears greatly grew and conse-quently the grain number per hill highly increased.3. In the case of one-hill planting in a pot, the leaves of the main stem decreased in number as compared with the case of three hills in a pot, though the number of ears and grains per hill highly increased.4. “Kameji”,a variety of panicle-weight type was higber than “Senbon-asahi” ,a variety of panicle-number type in the increasing rate of number of ears due to the heavy manuring or thinly spaced cultivation.
