Studies on Economical Methods of Fattening a Japanese Breed of Cattle

Recently it has become the center of public attention, especially among those of the agrarian districts, to obtain much income by selling Japanese breeds of cattle after satisfactory fattening. A remarkable advance has hitherto been seen in the method of breeding cattle. Methyl-thiouracil, so called Meat-more, is mixed with fodder for fattening, and Urea is added to the fodder in order to reduce the breeding cost. This study was carried out, at Kumage County, Yamaguti Prefecture, Japan, on 96 head of the Japanese breed of cattle. They were sold upon the completion of fattening for a period of 94 days to 140 days. The crude profit was on the average only \5,000($14) per head. However, the net income was variable ac-cording to each head of cattle fattened. It was from as much as \20,000($56) down to minus income. In conclusion, it was revealed that much stress should be put on the selection of “Motousi” (Original cattle to be fattened) of good breeding.
