1. In order to examine stoppage of protoplasmic streaming, forming of protoplasmic partitions and begining of plasmolysis, root hair cells of wheat were observed in the solutions of various concentrations of neutral red, KC1, NaC1, CaC1_2 and NH_4C1. 2. When protoplasmic streaming was inhibited by these chemical substances, protoplasmic partitions usually appeared, accompanied by protoplasmic swelling and vacuolar contraction in root hair cells. 3. Appearance of protoplasmic pratitions in root hair cells was presumed to be a convenient indicator of vital activity in varioys unwholesome environments. (Received June 30. 1976)
