Descriptions
The histological distribution of vitamin C contained in root crops was ascertained using the tissue of radish with thick xylem. The histochemical observation was performed by treating the tissue of it with silver nitrate solution, then the amountof vitamin C contained in various tissues were determined respectively. The results obtained were as follows. Speaking of four vertical parts of root of radish in harvesting season, the largest amount of vitamin C was contained both in the cortex and in and around the vascular bundle including the cambium where the cell division is active, while only a small amount was contained in the parenchyma which forms the main part of the flesh of root crops. The former two also contained a large amount of dehydroascorbic acid. Furthermore, the fact was observed in every tissue that vitamin C is contained the most abundantly in the cusp part as well as in the upper part, the lower partcomes next, and only a small amount is contained in the middle part.
