DNA analysis by flow cytometry (FCM) was performed using paraffin-embedded tissue specimens from 33 patients with rena cell carcinoma who had received nephrectomy or renal biopsy in our Department between Junuary 1975 and September 1986. The results were as follows. (1) The DNA analysis was possible in 94% (31/33). (2) DNA ploidy analysis showed that DNA diploidy was in 71% (22 cases), DNA polyploidy was in 6% (2 cases), DNA aneuploidy was in 23% (7 cases). (3) Histological grade showed that DNA aneuploidy was observed with higher frequency in grade 2 and grade 3 than in grade 1 (p<0.05). (4) The statistical significant was not observed between clinical stage and DNA ploidy. (5) The significant difference was not observed in prognosis between DNA ploidy (21 cases) and DNA aneuploide (8 cases) during the mean observation period of 57.9 months (18-119 months). However cancer specific survival rate of 14 cases showed that the mean survival ratio was shorter, 13.4 months in DNA aneuploidy than 29.0 months in DNA diploidy.
