In oder to elucidate the relationship between rolling contact fatigue strength and mechanical properties of carbon steel for machine structual use (S45C), experimentes were conducted on the quenched and temperd samples by universal testing machine and a Nishimura-type rolling contact fatigue testing machine under a lubricated with sliding. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) The rolling contact fatigue endurace limits (Pg) of S45C, the hardness of which is changed with heat treatment, are in proportion to hardness. In the hardness range of about 230 to 660Hv, the relationship between the hardness and Pg, is shown in the following emprical formula: Pg = 0.25・Hv´+ 8.11 2) It seems, under the present experimental condition, the rolling contact fatigue strength is decided by the maximum shearing stress or the shearing stress amplitude maximum.
