A 60-year-old man who was diagnosed as having squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus by biopsy and treated by electron radiation was autopsied. Macroscopically, there was diffuse infilration in the middle of the esophagus and another tumor of oval shape at the oral margin of the former. Histologically, the area of diffuse infiltration was carcinosarcomatous with the mixture of squamous cell carcinoma and anaplastic spindle-shaped cells whereas the latter showed pseudosaecomatous appearance with only spindle cell companent. Metastatic foci in the regional lymph nodes were made of the spindle-shaped cells. Keratin formation was demonstrated in the spindle-shaped cells and epithelial origin of this tumor was strongly suggested.
