While music and the fine arts are two separate subjects that have their own worlds in school education, they can be viewed as two realizations of the same field-the education of art. As teachers of music or the fine arts, how much are we aware, in our daily activities, of the common properties and differences between the two subjects? As a first step to the exploration of the common properties and differences, this paper discusses 1) the training of teachers and 2) the quality of teachers needed for each of the two ssubjects. The main purpose of music education in the training of teachers is to produce music teachers with high quality. Music teachers, in our view, must be able to understand music as a culture, to appreciate how wonderful it is to be involved in music and convey it to students, to express themselves in music, to appreclate muslc. The main purpose of fine arts education in the training of teachers is to produce teachers of the fine arts with high quality. We think teachers of the subject must be able 1) to recognize the worlds of the finearts, 2) to understand the fine arts as a culture and to appreciate how wonderful it is to produce works of art and convey it to students, 3) to produce works of art themselves, and have a principled thought about art.
