Of the 932 cases of breast cancer that underwent surgery at this department, 13 (1.4%) were in younger women than 29 years of age (mean age, 26 years). There were no cases of a family history of breast cancer. Three were unmarried, 10 were married. Of the latter, there were 5 cases of breast cancer while pregnant or lactating. Preoperative stagring yielded 8 cases in Stage I, II, 5 in Stage III, IV. The mastectomy was 11 cases, and the breast-conserving surgery was 2. Of the 4 cases where estrogen receptor was measured, 3 were negative. Postoperative adjuvant therapy consisted of chemotherapy in 6 cases, radiation therapy in 3, and nothing in 5. At the time of study, 9 (2 to 30 years) of these patients are alive, and well, 4 died of their breast cancer between 3 months and 15 years after surgery. Breast cancer in young women is often advanced at the time of the diagnosis, and onset during pregnancy and lactation is also common. Regular examinations and education in selfexamination are important for the early detection of this disease.
