Growth inhibition (GI) by Baciilus aneurinolyticus (BKA) on serveral bacteria and candida was examined. The spectrum of GI was very wide and somewhat compared. The number of GI-positive cultures of BKA was itemized as follows : Among the 74 strains of BKA used in this study, the number of strains found to be effective growth inhibitors were 54 for staphylococci, 64 or 67 strains for lactobacilli, and 58 strains for candida. However, only 3 strains of BKA were effective for a wild strain of Eschericha coli ATCC 9637, which is a thiamine indespendent strain, and 18 strains of BKA were effective for the less mutant of differences in the characteristics among the strains of BKA. These facts imply that GI of BKA on bacteria and candida is due to some kind of antibiotic phenomena. Therefore, these phenomena could also be used also be used for the detection of comonies of BKA, by the recognition of growth inhibitory zones against test bacteria.
