In response to ischemia and reperfusion, mammalian cells induce various pathways that lead to cell death and organ dysfunction. Although PKC isoforms are known to be differentially expressed in various cells and regulated by distinct activators, the role of PKC isoforms in ischemic heart have been poorly elucidated. PKC α, δ, and ε isoforms translocate to distinct organelle during ischemia. PKC ζ, an atypical PKC isoforms, which is activated by phosphoinositide 3-kinase during ischemia, induces MAPK activation through MEK in the nucleus during reperfusion, and PKC ζ/MAPK pathway protects cells from apoptosis during reperfusion through α-enolase expression.
