The Oosima-gun consists of a main island and many small neighboring islands in the Inland Sea. It is presumed that the rice cultivation in this district began nearly 2000 years ago. During this long period, the paddy fields inclined up to the hills and extended out to the sea shore. For irrigation, many wells, pools, dams and canals were developed.
