During the past six years, thirty-eight patients with abdominal trauma adomitted to Yawatahama General Hospital and thirty-five patients had undergone laparotomy. There were 34 male and 4 female patients. There were thirty three patients with blunt trauma and five patients with penetrating wound. Small bowel was most often lacerated (14 cases) and mesentery was second (11 cases). Forty-six percent of patients underwent operation within six hours of injury. Diagnosis and decision concerning surgery were made by signs of peritoneal irritation (16 cases), plain roentgenograms (6 cases), abdominal paracentesis (4 cases) and penetrating wound (5 cases). Indications for laparotomy were discussed.
