piezoelectric PVDF film characteristics sensor actuator nonlinear behavior
This paper presents an experimental study on the characteristics of a piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film. The film is bonded on a thin stainless steel beam and works as a distributed sensor or actuator. The sensing and the driving characteristics of PVDF are studied experimentally. The results obtained show that the PVDF can be used both as an effective distributed sensor and actuator for the control of flexible structures. It is also found that the PVDF shows significant nonlinear characteristics particularly when used as a sensor, which leads to an understanding that the nonlinear characteristics of PVDF should be taken into account in the design or the operation of a piezoelectric distributed film sensor.
