3. Flavonoid compounds of Brazilian woods. The flavonoid compounds are usually contained abundantly in the epidermal cells and parenchymal cells of outer cortex, though they are often found in the bark and xylem. KANEHIRA mentioned that the alcohol extracts of woods acidified by adding a few drops of concentrated HC1 solution showed the colours of various kinds when they were treated with a small quantity of mercury and metallic magnesium powder. He also added that this variety of colouration of the extracts was due to the flavone derivatives which served the purpose in identifying the kinds of woods. The identification of Brazilian woods by KANEHIRA's method was found not to be satisfactorily utilizable for the purpose. The writers detected the flavonoid compounds by using the method of Paper Chromatography. Among 58 kinds of Brazilian woods 26 kinds were proved to have the flavonoid compounds. Quercetin was found to be of general occurrence, The list of Brazilian woods which have flavonoid compounds is mentioned on pages 205―206.
