Misima was first mentioned in the WamyoruizyiJsyo as a. village (Go) belonging to the county (Gun) Ootu-Gun. During the medieval times the island was rregarc'ed as of great importance from the commercial and political standpoint becaus it was a relay port or base for the ships bound for the continent. Such a position might have proved sometimes a base for the piraies (Wako). The people of Misima Island during the medieval times was evidently in very prosperous circumstances, and left many relics such as temple bells, gongs, Buddhist images or monuments. Misima is said to have developed into a county (Gum) in about the 4th year of Kanbun (1664 A.D.) when the inspection of Red Seal (Gosyuin) for Daimyos was held. It was quite astonishing that a small isolated island such as Misima became a county (Gun). It might be attributable to its political importance. In the 29th year of Meizi (1896 A.D.) the county Misima was included in the county Abu, and has been a village belonging to the latter county.
