The influences of soil (degraded paddy soil or normal paddy soil)and the method of cultivation (tilling, weeding or ridging)on the root elongation and rootsystem of rice plants and the oxidizing or reducing condition of paddy soil were investigated by using the transparent plastic pots already reported in the previous paper. The results obtained were as follows: ,(1)The roots of rice plants grown on the degraded paddy soil(Plot C)were whitish in appearance and were severely injured, though the rice plants grown on the normal paddy soi1(PlotA)had healthy reddish-brown roots which resulted from the coating of ferric hydroxide and a very small number of injured roots. 〔Plate43(1)〕 (2)At Plot B (tilled and weeded)the roots were found to spread more widelythan those at Plot A (control
