    Co-γFe_2O_3perpendicular magnetic recording media were preparedby the CoO-Fe_3O_4single-1ayer deposition method, which is more suitable for mass production than the CoO/ Fe_3O_4 multilayer deposition method. Moderately <100>-oriented Co-γFe_2O_3media with intermediate perpendicular anisotropy (K_u=6.0 × 10^5erg/cm^3) were prepared with a wide range of film thicknesses and oxygen partial pressure used in deposition of NiO underlayers. These media showed a superior high-density recording performance comparable to that of highly <100>-oriented Co-γFe_2O_3 media with large perpendicular anisotropy (Ku=1.4 × 10^6 erg/cm^3). It is surmised that the superior performance of these media was supported by the longitudinal magnetic component as well as the perpendicular one.
