1.The root elongation and the root system of rice plants and the oxidizing or reducing condition of soil during nursery period under different conditions of nursery type or sowing season were investigated by using the transparent plastic pots. 2. In the upland nursery, the roots of seedlings elongated most rapidly. In the irrigated nursery, the number ot roots was the greatest and the development of branch roots was the best. The growth of rootsgrown in the semi-irrjgated nursery was in the middle between the irri -gated nursery and the upland nursery. The reduction of nursery soil, the coating of ferric bydroxide on roots and the iron accumlation layer were observed in the irrigated or the seml-irrigated nursery. 3.The nursery of the late-season culture was the best in the root elongation and development, and next in order were the normal-season nursery, and the early-season nursery.
