A case of idiopathic cerebral calcification complicated with severe diabetes mellitus was presented. The patient, 48-years-old female was normal at birth and infancy. Her parents, two sisters and a brother are all healthy. She had been healthy and had not noticed any physical troubles until her age of forty when she was pointed out as diabetes mellitus by a physician. Since about 45-years old impair ment of speech and swallowing have developed. Mild right hemiplegia also appeared at that time. These symptoms have progressed. Then, she was admitted to Yamaguchi Central Hospital on Sep. 19, 1980. 1) Dementia, pseudobulbar palsy and limb ataxia were revealed by neurological examinations. 2) Her laboratory findings were normal except serum and C. S. F. glucose level. Her parathyroid and other endocrine functions were also normal. 3) CT scan showed the severe calcification of the white matter of the cerebrum, basal ganglia and dentate nucli of the cerebellum. From those findings we thought this condition as idiopathic cerebral calcification, however, we discussed ”whether this is really idiopathic or there are any possibility to cause these cerebral calcification by diabetic angiopathy”. Further studies are required for the answer.
