A 46-year-old woman was admitted with complaints of recurrent loss of consciousness, and numbness and weakness in the lower extremities. She was operated for cataracts about 20 years ago and had a low concentration of serum calcium at that time. The physical examination on her recent admission ahowed a positive Trousseau's sign and negative Chvosteck's sign. Serum calcium concentration was 3.0 mEg/l and serum phosphorus 4.1 mEg/l. Serum immunoreactive parathyroid hormone concentration was 0/65 ng/ml. Other measured values included : serum magnesium, 2.1 mg/dl
