The mathematical education or ‘mathematics’ in college is divided into six kinds as follows: 1. math, in liberal arts for the students of literary course 2. fundamental math, for the students of scientific course 3. pure math, for the mathematics majors 4 practical math, for the non-majors 5. math, for training teachers in mathematics 6. math, for training teachers of primary schools. As regards these 2 through 5 the aim of guidance and educational contents are definite and there are no essential problems, but concerning 1 and 6 both the aim and contents are still being studied. About 1, as it is some sort of education through mathematical materials, it must be considered (1) to recognize that mathematics is languages, (2) to understand logic inmathematics, (3) to emphasize that mathematics is a metaphysical study, and (4) to make students have interest in mathematical application. About 6, although it is certainly an education to let the students learn mathematics itself, it is not that they use that mathematics themselves, indeed the goal is, by means of the study, to induce them (1)to get mathematical knowledge and skill, (2)to be able to make logical composition, (3) to acknowledge mathematics as culture, (4) to find the merit-beauty and utility-of mathematics, and (5) to transmit a mathematical inheritance to the younger generation.
