ln the teaching of writing in English, translation from Japanese to English has been dominantly used in Japan. As a result, most Japanese students have a great deal of difficulty in expressing their own ideas in English because they are used to being given what to write. Furthermore, since both teachers and students have concentrated on accuracy at the sentence level, their scope of writing has not been expanded beyond a sentence. Considering these weak points, a non-translation approach was adopted in teaching English composition for sophomore students. Various techniques have been introduced and practiced in the classroom
