The purpose of this study was to assess the factors involved in the mortality rate in patients who were admitted in our clinic from January 1, 1980 to, July 31, 1988. Of 189 patients, 153 patients had gastrointestinal hemorrage before surgery and 35 patients had it after surgery. The mortality rate in patients with gastrointestinal homorrage was 6% (9/153) before surgery and 40% (14/35) after surgery. Factors involved in the mortality rate in patients with gastrointestinal hemorrage before or after surgery were 1) MOF (multiple organ failure), 2) mesenteric thrombosis and 3) advancement of the cancer. The mortality rate in patients with postperative hemorrage was higher than that in patients with preoperative hemorrage in the older age group over 50 years old, while there was no statistical significance between, before, and after srugery in the younger age froup below 50 years old.
