In the near future, an arrival of the time of elderly society is inevitable in Japan. Medicine and medical care becoming the center of interest of peoples, Japanease society now has expressed unsatisfaction for medical services and medical staffs. Refrecting these voices from the society, the department of general internal medicine began to newly found in some medical schools in order to promote a primary care medicine since 1990. The medical practice required to the department of general internal medicine is a comprehensive medicine maily over a fence of specific medicines depend on each organs. The most important educational directions for medical students and training doctors seem to be a development of patient-physician well relationship and a cultivation of basic medical science and art. Especially, to teach the clinical competence sufficiently is necessary to young physicians in my country. Moreover, palliative care medicine, family medicine, preventive medicine are also included in our activites of general internal medicine.
