An isolator with a height of 1 mm, approximately two-thirds that of the conventional isolators now on the market, was successfully developed. The isolator consists of a thin YIG ferrite platelet, a silver microstrip Y-junction as a transmission line, a ferrite permanent magnet platelet for generating a magnetic bias field, and an iron yoke as a part of a magnetic circuit. The thickness of the YIG ferrite platelet, the ferrite magnet platelet, and the iron yoke was reduced to less than 0.3 mm to achieve a total device height of 1 mm. The transmission characteristics of the isolator were analyzed, using the finite element method. The simulated transmission characteristics of the designed isolator showed non-reciprocal operation at 5 GHz with an insertion loss of 0.65 dB, and an isolation over 20 dB. A thin YIG ferrite platelet with a ferromagnetic resonance width (delta H) of 5.6 kA/m was fabricated by a novel sintering method using a pulsed current under uniaxial pressurization followed by flash annealing. The fabricated isolator successfully operated at 5 GHz with an insertion loss of 0.7 dB and an isolation of 23 dB, which are acceptable transmission characteristics for practical use.
